Namaste !
I'm Simran Wahan, a contemporary artist from India, and my work blends the rich heritage of my homeland with contemporary realities.
Inspired by Goddesses, Simran infuses figurative and abstract forms to dive into the subconscious, questioning the line between reality and imagination.
In her ongoing presentation, The Sindoor Series, Simran enhances the red dot or the bindi that represents the Indian woman. The traditional sindoor used for the bindi is a powder made with turmeric & alum or lime, sometimes mixed with other cooling herbs.
The bindi is the coloured dot in the center of the forehead as used by many Indian women. Traditionally, the area between the eyebrows, where the bindi sits, is said to be the sixth chakra and the bindi is believed to generate energy and often represents the third eye.
Simran uses acrylics, watercolors, inks, and digital tools to bring the concepts of spirituality, divinity and femineity to life.
